History of Virtual Sober Start

"Sober Start" was founded on May 14, 1996, and the group met in person on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Sea Cliff Long Island.  About 6 months later, the group expanded meetings to several more days a week.

A Saturday morning meeting, separate from Sober Start, called "Sleepless in Sea Cliff*", was formed.  Eventually, Sober Start absorbed that Saturday meeting and expanded to having meetings every morning of the week.  We are a literature-based group, and read from a different AA literature piece every day except one, when we have a *closed discussion meeting.

A Zoom contingent of Sober Start began soon after the pandemic lockdown in March/April 2020.  In 2021, the Sober Start in person group severed ties with the online group, and the online group then became "Virtual" Sober Start, an international on-line group that meets 7 days a week at 6:30am EST.

Monday - 12 Steps & 12 Traditions*
Tuesday - Beginners
Wednesday - Big Book
Thursday - Daily Reflections
Friday - Promises**
Saturday - Closed Discussion

*The last Monday of the month is a traditions meeting.

**The first Friday of the month is a celebration of the previous month's annual anniversaries.

Business meetings are held on the Second Saturday of every month after the Closed Discussion meeting.

At the beginning of every meeting there is a time for newcomers, visitors, and people counting days to introduce themselves.  Please say hello at this time so people know you are new and they will reach out.  Going further if you ask for help or have questions stick around after the meeting and either speak up or post something in the chat.
